The full breakdown

What's on the 100T Master exam — and how to pass it.

The USCG 100-Ton Master license is the working captain’s next credential after OUPV. It opens commercial work on inspected passenger vessels: small ferries, dinner cruises, dive charters, and near-coastal sightseeing operations under 100 gross tons.

What’s on the exam

The USCG National Maritime Center administers five modules for the Master 100GRT upgrade:

  • Rules of the Road (50 questions, 90% to pass) — COLREGs and Inland Rules. Same module as OUPV, same pass standard. Independent exam attempt.
  • Deck General & Safety (70 questions, 70% to pass) — vessel terminology, knots, anchoring, weather, cargo handling, towing.
  • Navigation General (60 questions, 70% to pass) — aids to navigation, charts, compass piloting, tides, GPS, voyage planning.
  • Vessel Construction & Stability — Master-specific. Tonnage, freeboard, intact and damage stability, 46 CFR Subchapter T construction rules.
  • Chart Plotting — required for Near Coastal endorsement; tested separately on actual NOAA charts.

Why this exam is the OUPV grad’s hardest fight

Stability is where most OUPV-to-Master candidates struggle. The exam asks you to reason about metacentric height, righting arm, trim, and load planning — concepts you can pass OUPV without touching. The construction & stability module is also where the NMC’s question pool draws the most heavily on 46 CFR Subchapter T, which OUPV barely tests.

How PassFirst helps

  • Adaptive practice on the modules where the upgrade actually hurts. Our Rasch-based engine tracks your accuracy per topic leaf — including the Master-only stability and construction topics — and surfaces fresh questions on what you’re weakest at.
  • Layered AI question generation grounded in primary sources. Every practice item is generated from authoritative source material (USCG Nav Rules, 46 CFR Subchapter T, NOAA Coast Pilot, Bowditch), graded by a separate model, and verified claim-by-claim against the source. No memorize-the-wrong-answer trap.
  • Captain’s tutor mode. Stuck on a stability calculation? Ask why. Get a Socratic walk-through that names the formula, the citation, and the operational reason it matters when you’re actually loading a vessel.
  • Voice-mode coach. Run through tonnage and stability scenarios out loud — the way you’d think them through on the bridge — with a coach that responds to what you say.

Built for working captains stepping up to command. Same engine as our OUPV product; the Master content is independently sourced so your practice rate isn’t capped by what you’ve already seen on the Six-Pack side.

Why candidates switch

The category looks identical. We're the exception.

Every other 100T Master app is the same rectangle of question, four buttons, one big "Next." It works — and it's genuinely uninspiring.

The incumbent app

  • Shows the answer, never the reasoning
  • Same random questions for everyone
  • No way to practice the out-loud parts
  • Streaks, timers, and leaderboards that add pressure
  • Content that quietly goes stale

PassFirst

  • A tutor that teaches the why on every miss
  • Adaptive engine that targets your weak topics
  • Voice-mode coaching for the operational parts
  • Honest diagnostics — no anxiety theater
  • Re-ingested against the live source documents

The honest answers.

Will this actually get me to pass?

No app can guarantee a pass — anyone who promises that is lying to you. What we can do is target your weak topics, teach the reasoning behind every miss, and give you an honest readiness signal before you sit the exam. Most candidates who reach "ready" on our diagnostic pass on the first try.

Is the content current for 2026?

Yes. Questions are generated and checked against the current 100T Master source documents, then re-ingested on a schedule when those documents change. We don't ship loosely paraphrased material.

Can I get a refund?

If PassFirst isn't right for you, email us within 14 days for a full refund — no rage-bait "are you sure?" flow, no hoops. We'd rather you trust us than feel trapped.

What if the rules change?

The question pool tracks the current federal source documents. When the regulations update, the affected questions are regenerated and re-verified — and your access carries through it.

Do you have my exam version?

This is a federal credential, so the question pool is scoped to exactly the federal knowledge sections you'll be tested on — no state variations to worry about.
