The full breakdown

What's on the Pesticide exam — and how to pass it.

Becoming a certified pesticide applicator is the gateway to applying restricted-use pesticides in agriculture, lawn care, structural pest control, and the ornamental & turf industry. Every state administers the exam, but the Core knowledge is the national EPA standard — the same material in the EPA/NASDA National Pesticide Applicator Certification CORE Manual.

What’s on the exam

The Core exam tests the universal knowledge every certified applicator needs, drawn from the EPA Core manual:

  • Pest management & IPM — identification, thresholds, control methods, resistance management.
  • Pesticide labeling — signal words, the parts of the label, and why the label is the law.
  • Formulations — liquids, dusts, granules, dry flowables, adjuvants.
  • Human health & PPE — routes of exposure, protective equipment, poisoning symptoms and first aid.
  • Environment & drift — droplet size, water protection, non-target effects.
  • Equipment & calibration — sprayers, nozzles, applying the right rate.
  • Laws & regulations — FIFRA, RUP classification, certification, the Worker Protection Standard.
  • Storage, transport & disposal — safe storage, triple rinsing.
  • Emergencies & spills — the three C’s: Control, Contain, Clean up.

Plus the Ornamental & Turf category for applicators specializing in lawns, landscapes, and nursery plantings.

How PassFirst helps

  • Adaptive practice. Our engine targets the topics where you’re weakest, so every minute of study moves the needle.
  • Grounded AI question generation. Every practice item is generated from authoritative source material (the EPA Core manual, FIFRA, 40 CFR), graded by a separate model, and verified claim-by-claim against the source. No memorize-the-wrong-answer traps.
  • Applicator’s tutor mode. Stuck on signal words or REIs? Ask why and get a plain-language explanation tied back to the manual chapter.
  • Recert-friendly. Refresh the Core fast when your 3-to-5-year recertification comes due.

Built for working applicators, grounded in the federal standard.

Why candidates switch

The category looks identical. We're the exception.

Every other Pesticide app is the same rectangle of question, four buttons, one big "Next." It works — and it's genuinely uninspiring.

The incumbent app

  • Shows the answer, never the reasoning
  • Same random questions for everyone
  • No way to practice the out-loud parts
  • Streaks, timers, and leaderboards that add pressure
  • Content that quietly goes stale

PassFirst

  • A tutor that teaches the why on every miss
  • Adaptive engine that targets your weak topics
  • Honest diagnostics — no anxiety theater
  • Re-ingested against the live source documents

The honest answers.

Will this actually get me to pass?

No app can guarantee a pass — anyone who promises that is lying to you. What we can do is target your weak topics, teach the reasoning behind every miss, and give you an honest readiness signal before you sit the exam. Most candidates who reach "ready" on our diagnostic pass on the first try.

Is the content current for 2026?

Yes. Questions are generated and checked against the current Pesticide source documents, then re-ingested on a schedule when those documents change. We don't ship loosely paraphrased material.

Can I get a refund?

If PassFirst isn't right for you, email us within 14 days for a full refund — no rage-bait "are you sure?" flow, no hoops. We'd rather you trust us than feel trapped.

What if the rules change?

The question pool tracks the current federal source documents. When the regulations update, the affected questions are regenerated and re-verified — and your access carries through it.

Do you have my exam version?

This is a federal credential, so the question pool is scoped to exactly the federal knowledge sections you'll be tested on — no state variations to worry about.
